Small Presses Expert Editor's Recommended Book, 10/01/96:
Drama teacher Joy Stone is losing her grip. In a captivating story of
the onset and evolution of depression, her problems accumulate,
denial activates, and food becomes a major player. Through the wit
and irony that is gaining international applause, Galloway crafts the
chicken-or-egg dilemma of life in our times and being depressed.
Yet even through her growing obsessions and the metamorphoses
of family and friends into suspicious characters, Galloway's main
character and the reader find that the trick in living rests with the
simplest things.

cwperry@uiuc.edu, 02/03/97, rating=10:
Gripping acount of a young woman's severe depression
Galloway's account of a young woman's depression is written in a
gripping style that includes interesting devices such as characters'
thoughts printed in the margins and sometimes bleeding off the page
in mid-letter, creating an emotional reading experience that will both
exhaust and fascinate the reader. A dark book that certainly
surprised me when I found a small university press version and,
ultimately, one of the best modern novels I've read.
